Jean Leon Joins the “Biosphere Commitment to Sustainability”

Responsible tourism, environmentally sustainable, socially inclusive, and universally accessible. These are the four criteria that govern and make up the essence of the “Biosphere Destination” sustainability seal, an international recognition is awarded by the Responsible Tourism Institute (RTI). The RTI is a body associated with UNESCO through a Memorandum of Understanding, in addition to being a member of the World Tourism Organization and Global Sustainable Tourism Council, while the Biosphere community has agreements with the world’s main tour operators, providing positioning, visibility, promotion, and international marketing.

In 2017, Barcelona Provincial Council obtained “Biosphere Responsible Tourism” certification, recognizing the province of Barcelona as a sustainable and responsible tourist destination. This entity, together with the Responsible Tourism Institute and the Barcelona Chamber of Commerce have promoted the “Biosphere Sustainability Commitment” certification in the province, with the aim of guaranteeing the quality and sustainability of a destination’s public and private tourist services.

At Jean Leon, we endorsed the “Biosphere” seal last March. This seal can be renewed annually and certifies and qualifies our visitor center as a sustainable space that promotes environmental conservation, encourages cultural protection and socio-economic development, and is committed to customer satisfaction.

To receive this distinction, it is necessary to demonstrate meeting the requirements established by this recognized model of sustainable and responsible tourism. We currently meet the majority of these criteria and, over the coming months, we will continue to work to finish implementing some energy consumption optimization measures, such as energy saving devices for lighting, e.g. motion sensors in bathrooms, or completely switching from traditional light bulbs to an LED system.

Our visitor center, designed by renowned architect Domingo Triay, opened in 2002 and is located in a unique spot, as well as being backed by a film-worthy story and one-of-a-kind wines. We offer guided tours, tastings, and exclusive gastronomic experiences. Visitors can discover the secrets of how we make our wines, do a tour of the majestic vineyards on a Segway, electric scooter, or by Nordic walking, and also participate in harvest activities or enjoy food and wine pairings.

The “Biosphere Destination” locations are analyzed taking into account their contribution to the United Nations’ 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and the Paris Climate Agreement through the guidelines set out in the World Charter for Sustainable Tourism. With a broad presence and the support of international agencies, Biosphere is the most recognized responsible and sustainable tourism guarantee worldwide. At Jean Leon, we continue and will continue to work every day in the interest of our commitment to the environment and sustainability.
