The influence of the Mediterranean climate makes the region a rich land for the cultivation of vines.\u00a0\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The<strong> history of wine in the Pened\u00e8s<\/strong> dates back to the 6th century BC, when the <strong>axis of the Mediterranean<\/strong> wine culture passed through the region. Proof of this is the site of the <em>Font de la Canya<\/em>, an inhabited center of goods from the Iberian period, between the 7th and 1st centuries BC, located in the heart of the Pened\u00e8s. The recovered materials informed us about the commercial exchanges with Phoenicians, Greeks, Carthaginians and Romans. And they allowed us to date the beginnings of the vineyard and wine in the territory, starting with the commercial exchanges with the Phoenicians.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In addition, archaeological work carried out in the vineyards of the winery last year revealed a <a href=\"https:\/\/jeanleon.com\/en\/iberian-site-jean-leon-archaeological-remains-wine\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">site<\/a> from the Iberian period of the 2<sup>nd<\/sup> and 1<sup>st<\/sup> centuries BC. A discovery that connects the winemaking past of the Pened\u00e8s and the present of Jean Leon\u2019s winery.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The magnificent geographical situation of the Pened\u00e8s made this area become a great land of wines that increased its prestige over time.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Over time, wine <strong>production in the Pened\u00e8s has evolved <\/strong>and has become the economic engine of the region, with more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.penedesturisme.cat\/en\/denominacio-dorigen-penedes\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">6000 people working in the more than 250 wineries in the area.<\/a><\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Today,<strong> the wineries of the Pened\u00e8s<\/strong> continue to produce high quality wines, thanks to the combination of tradition and technology.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Pened\u00e8s Zones and Subzones<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Currently, the Pened\u00e8s Designation of Origin identifies <strong>10 zones within the territory<\/strong>: Alts d&#8217;Ancosa, Conca del Foix, Costers de l&#8217;Anoia, Costers del Lavern\u00f3, Costers del Montmell, Marina del Garraf, Mass\u00eds del Garraf, Muntanyes d&#8217;Ordal, Turons de Vilafranca and Vall Bitlles-Anoia.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Although broadly speaking, we can divide the Pened\u00e8s 3 subcategories, based on altitude, and therefore, with different climatic characteristics:\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li><strong>Upper Pened\u00e8s<\/strong>, close to the pre-coastal mountain range.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Lower Pened\u00e8s<\/strong>, next to the coastal mountain range and the sea.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Middle Pened\u00e8s<\/strong>, located between the two previous zones.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"wp-image-53151\" src=\"https:\/\/jeanleon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/Proyecto-nuevo-7-850x539.jpg\" alt=\"Bodegas Pened\u00e8s\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>The wines of the Pened\u00e8s: varieties and characteristics<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image size-large\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone wp-image-7064 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/jeanleon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/bodega-jl.jpg\" alt=\"Jean Leon Winery\" width=\"850\" height=\"539\" srcset=\"https:\/\/jeanleon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/bodega-jl.jpg 850w, https:\/\/jeanleon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/bodega-jl-300x190.jpg 300w, https:\/\/jeanleon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2023\/02\/bodega-jl-768x487.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 850px) 100vw, 850px\" \/><\/figure>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The wines of this area are known for their unique flavor and aroma, which are due to the <strong>combination of the quality of the grapes and the influence of the Mediterranean climate<\/strong>. The DO Pened\u00e8s produces red, white and ros\u00e9 wines, ranging from young and light wines to mature and complex wines.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Varieties<\/strong>\u00a0<\/h3>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The DO Pened\u00e8s has a wide range of wines with traditional varieties and others that have been successfully introduced and acclimatized in the area.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The white varieties authorized and recommended by the DO are:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Macabeu, Xarel.lo, Parellada, Subirat Parent, Garnatxa blanca, Moscatell d&#8217;Alexandria, Moscatell de grano menudo, Malvasia de Sitges, Chardonnay, Sauvignon blanc, Riesling, Gewurztraminer, Chenin blanc, Sumoi blanc, Viognier, Xarel.lo rosat and Forcada.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">While the red varieties authorized and recommended by the DO are:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Ull de Llebre, Garnatxa tinta, Sams\u00f3, Monastrell, Sumoi tinto, Cabernet Sauvignon, Merlot, Pinot noir, Syrah, Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot and Moneu.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Among all these, we highlight the following:<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li><strong>Xarel-lo:<\/strong> Flagship variety of the Pened\u00e8s and Jean Leon, since we make our wine <a href=\"https:\/\/jeanleon.com\/en\/wines\/jean-leon-xarello\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">100% xarel-lo<\/a>. This variety is characterized by a white grape from which both still and sparkling wines can be made, used for young and aged wines.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Chardonnay:<\/strong> International variety introduced in the Pened\u00e8s in the 1960s. It is also used for wine and sparkling wines. We currently make 2 wines with this variety: <a href=\"https:\/\/jeanleon.com\/en\/wines\/vinya-gigi-chardonnay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vinya Gigi<\/a> and <a href=\"https:\/\/jeanleon.com\/en\/wines\/3055-chardonnay\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3055 Chardonnay<\/a>.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Garnacha Blanca<\/strong>: Grape commonly used for blends, although more and more single varietals are being produced. <a href=\"https:\/\/jeanleon.com\/en\/wines\/gb-21\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">GB-21 experimental wine<\/a>, this is our single varietal white Grenache.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Forcada: <\/strong>A minority ancestral variety, but interesting for climate change, due to its late ripening and high acidity. In 2020, we planted this variety on our estate, which was approved that same year by the appellation.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\r\n<li><strong>Garnatxa Tinta: <\/strong>Traditional Mediterranean variety. It produces wines with very good alcohol content and body, suitable for aging in oak. At Jean Leon we have a ros\u00e9 wine<a href=\"https:\/\/jeanleon.com\/en\/wines\/3055-rose\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> 3055 Ros\u00e9<\/a> that has a small part of red garnatxa in the blend.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Merlot: <\/strong>It is found in the Central Pened\u00e8s and is used to produce excellent varietal and aromatic wines, as well as full-bodied and tannic wines such as our <a href=\"https:\/\/jeanleon.com\/en\/wines\/vinya-palau-merlot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vinya Palau.<\/a><\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Pinot Noir: <\/strong>A variety that has demonstrated a great capacity for acclimatization in the Pened\u00e8s. It gives an aromatic excellence and admits a good aging. The wine <a href=\"https:\/\/jeanleon.com\/en\/wines\/3055-rose\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">3055 Ros\u00e9<\/a> also has this wonderful variety.\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Cabernet Sauvignon: <\/strong>Another example of a variety that has demonstrated a great capacity for acclimatization in the Pened\u00e8s. Its aromas become more complex with aging, exhibiting notes of smoke, cedar and truffle, like our wines <a href=\"https:\/\/jeanleon.com\/en\/wines\/vinya-le-havre\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vinya le Havre <\/a>and <a href=\"https:\/\/jeanleon.com\/en\/wines\/vinya-la-scala\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Vinya la Scala<\/a>.\u00a0\u00a0<\/li>\r\n<li><strong>Petit Verdot: <\/strong>Thanks to its late ripening, it has adapted well in the region. It brings color, aromas, acidity and tannins to the wines. Our<a href=\"https:\/\/jeanleon.com\/en\/wines\/3055-merlot\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\"> 3055 Petit Verdot-Merlot<\/a> is also organic.<\/li>\r\n<\/ul>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>Jean Leon and his relationship with the Pened\u00e8s region<\/strong><\/h2>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">In 1962 <a href=\"https:\/\/jeanleon.com\/en\/the-man\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener\">Jean Leon <\/a>arrived in the Pened\u00e8s in search of the best land to make a wine that would be up to the standards of his select clientele at his Beverly Hills restaurant, La Scala. Having already traveled all over the world in search of an area with specific characteristics that would allow him to make a wine with a singularity, personality and unique identity, he decided on the Pened\u00e8s.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">During that year, he<strong> acquired 150 hectares<\/strong> of the best land in the region and proposed to Jaume Rovira, then a 21-year-old oenology student, to join the team of the future winery.\u00a0<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A year later, to the surprise of the local winegrowers, Jean Leon included grafts of <strong>Cabernet Sauvignon, Cabernet Franc and Chardonnay<\/strong> vines from prestigious French wineries in his vineyards. An unusual decision that resulted in the first wines made and labeled as Cabernet Sauvignon in Spain.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">More recently, in 2002, we planted the first Petit Verdot vines, on an experimental basis, but they were approved by the DO in 2010. Finally, in 2011, we released the first vintage (2010) of Jean Leon 3055 Merlot-Petit Verdot (until 2012 known as &#8216;Petit Merlot&#8217;). And in 2020, we planted Forcada and Moneu in the Jean Leon vineyards, two native varieties recently approved by the appellation.<\/p>\r\n\r\n\r\n\r\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Jean Leon wines are renowned for their quality.
