That is why the Pened\u00e8s Tourist Board is\ncommitted to raising the profile of some corners of the region that only a few\npeople know about, but that are definitely worth discovering. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These different\nsecrets come from both the public and private sphere, generate synergies\nbetween each other, and enable visitors to discover related and complementary ideas\nfor ways to enjoy the region. The key figures in these different\noptions are the residents of the Pened\u00e8s themselves; the hosts\nwho welcome visitors to their region. Today, we\u2019re revealing a total of 10\nsecrets, selected following conversations, interviews, and meetings with all of\nthe local key figures and other agents involved in the initiative. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">This is just the\nbeginning, though, since the challenge is for this action to remain current, so\nit will be able to stay open, alive, and to be adapted at any time to the new ideas\nput forward by the agents involved in the region and by all of the people or entities\nthat want to do their bit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">These are the secrets of\nthe Pened\u00e8s that have been revealed up to now:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Bernat\u2019s secret: I work the land with horses.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">A team formed by a man and a mare plow the Pened\u00e8s vineyards, home to a wide variety of terrains, different weather and farming methods. This is getting back to basics, when the work in the vineyard was done alongside animals, making the wines the result of a process connected to roots and nature.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jeanleon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/penedes_cavalls-850x560.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-39554\"\/><figcaption>Foto: www.enoturismepenedes.cat<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Elisabeth\u2019s secret: The Pened\u00e8s cockerel.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Elisabeth breeds cockerels on her small farm, in a welcoming, family environment. These aren\u2019t just any cockerels, but Pened\u00e8s-breed cockerels that are native to the region. Together with other poultry farmers, she keeps this breed present in the region even today. This kind of cockerel is used as a basic ingredient in an iconic recipe: Pened\u00e8s cockerel with plums and pine nuts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jeanleon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/penedes_gallina-copy-850x560.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-39550\"\/><figcaption>Foto: www.enoturismepenedes.cat<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Ton\u2019s secret: The river path.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The idea of walking along the River Bitlles and the River Mediona always excites Ton and his sister Mariona: A path along these two rivers that passes by towns, forests, churches, and castles; a route where you can enjoy nature and the Pened\u00e8s landscape, either on foot or by bike.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jeanleon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/penedes-riu-850x560.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-39546\"\/><figcaption>Foto: www.enoturismepenedes.cat<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Vicen\u00e7\u2019s secret: Admiring the Pened\u00e8s from a giant chair.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pened\u00e8s landscape can be admired from many perspectives. But for Vicen\u00e7, there\u2019s one that\u2019s really special: from high up on a chair. This piece of furniture is a stopping point for anyone who passes walking, running, or biking along the nearby paths. From it, you can take in the varied landscapes offered by the area: fields, forests, and vineyards. For us here at Jean Leon, it\u2019s also a spot we really like. This secret is very close to the winery, and we always share it with our visitors so they can enjoy the Pened\u00e8s.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jeanleon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/penedes_mirador-850x560.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-39542\"\/><figcaption>Foto: www.enoturismepenedes.cat<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Joan\u2019s secret: We\u2019re the base.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The secret of the Castellers de Vilafranca human tower association lies at the base, that is, the root at the ground, which is where everything began. In the mid-19<sup>th<\/sup> century, when the human tower association of Valls was visiting Vilafranca, the Vilafranca residents positioned themselves at the bottom of the towers to provide support, making it possible to build constructions that were huge for that time, such as nine-level towers. This tradition of forming the ground-level base of the towers has lasted over time. Finally, in 1948 the Castellers de Vilafranca association was founded, keeping the essence of being at the foot even today, as Joan, the association\u2019s president, explains.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jeanleon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/penedes_csstells-850x560.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-39538\"\/><figcaption>Foto: www.enoturismepenedes.cat<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Carme and Sergi\u2019s secret: The word <em>p\u00e8lag<\/em>.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The word <em>p\u00e8lag<\/em> is only used in the Pened\u00e8s and describes a pool of water, as well as referring to a nature park in Vilob\u00ed del Pened\u00e8s, the Parc dels Talls. This park is a protected natural area that came about due to mining activity, which began in ancient times and continued up to the end of the last century. Today, four <em>p\u00e8lags<\/em> form part of this area that Carme and Sergi love so much. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jeanleon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/penedes_llac-850x560.jpg\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-39534\"\/><figcaption>Foto: www.enoturismepenedes.cat<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Victor\u2019s secret: The Pened\u00e8s border castles.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">With Victor, we discover the medieval past of the Pened\u00e8s, which, in the 10<sup>th<\/sup> century, was a region in between two very different territories: the Christian Catalan counties and the Moorish Emirate of Cordoba. Various castles and fortifications were built to cope with attacks, and these constructions have stood the test of time. Today, the castles in Gelida, Subirats, Ol\u00e8rdola, Foix, and Sant Mart\u00ed Sarroca are the witnesses of the battles between knights and Moors that took place centuries ago. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jeanleon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/penedes_castells-850x560.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-39530\"\/><figcaption>Foto: www.enoturismepenedes.cat<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>N\u00faria\u2019s secret: Vil\u00b7la Casals.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The Pened\u00e8s coastline is where we find the home of one of the best cellists of the 20<sup>th<\/sup> century: Pau Casals. Today a museum, Vil\u00b7la Pau Casals shows off the musical and human legacy of the man who owned the property before going into exile. This is the legacy N\u00faria is responsible for bringing to the visitors who come to the museum house in Sant Salvador. A letter signed by Einstein and a United Nations medal are some of the souvenirs you can find there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-image\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/jeanleon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/01\/penedes_casa-850x560.png\" alt=\"\" class=\"wp-image-39526\"\/><figcaption>Foto: www.enoturismepenedes.cat<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Dani\u2019s secret: Silo 169.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Numerous civilizations have passed through the Pened\u00e8s, including the Phoenicians, Carthaginians, and Iberians, making it a region where vines have been cultivated since time immemorial. In fact, it is believed that the Pened\u00e8s region \u2013 and with it the vineyard \u2013 was born 2,700 years ago, thanks to the archeological discovery by Dani and his team. In 2011, they discovered mineralized and carbonized seeds at the Iberian site at Font de la Canya (Avinyonet del Pened\u00e8s). Thought to be remains from pressing grapes, the team was thus able to establish a start date for the birth of this wine region. Fortunately, though, it was possible to recover vine growing some years later by replanting the vines using American rootstock grafts, which kept this crop from disappearing in the region. To commemorate this event, every year on September 7<sup>th<\/sup> and 8<sup>th<\/sup>, Sant Sadurn\u00ed d\u2019Anoia fills with festivities, firecrackers, music, and cava. Young and old alike take to the streets dressed in yellow.
