This is due to the fact\nthat most of us associate <strong>wines that\nhave corks with higher quality wines<\/strong>. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">The interesting\nthing is that although this idea of cork\/quality relationship is particularly\nwidespread in Spain, many other countries have switched to screw caps and the\nchangeover has been a smooth one. This is the case in <strong>Germany, Switzerland, the Netherlands, and England<\/strong>, where it\u2019s easy\nto find screw caps on the vast majority of prestigious wines in the supermarket,\neven those made by the main Spanish wineries. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">As you can see,\nit is possible to find topnotch screw-cap wines. However, we know that it\u2019s not\njust the quality of the grapes \u2013 which will be determined by the weather or the\nhealth condition of the vines \u2013 and the winery\u2019s production process that are\nkey in determining the quality of the wine. Materials such as <strong>the barrels, the bottles, and also the\nclosures,<\/strong> all play a fundamental role as well. <\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are those\nwho stick up for the screw cap when confronted with the history and tradition\nof cork closures, citing its 40-year track record and versatility, given the\nfact that when the aluminum caps began to be marketed, they soon made the leap\nfrom wine to other beverages that also found them to be the perfect solution.\nBut this isn\u2019t the only argument in favor that stands out. There\u2019s also the\nfact that they\u2019re convenient and safe, as well as the aesthetics.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">That said, this\ndoesn\u2019t mean that screw caps are ideal for every kind of wine. This is because <strong>the cork encourages\nmicro-oxygenation<\/strong>; in other words, it allows a minimal amount of oxygen to\npenetrate, which means a decrease in tannins and astringency.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">There are also\nthose who are staunch defenders of the cork closure, too. The arguments in\nfavor include <strong>sustainability<\/strong> \u2013 it is an ecological, natural, renewable,\nand recyclable product \u2013 <strong>and tradition<\/strong> \u2013 corks are part of the ritual of\ndrinking wine, and that added value is difficult to replace.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On the other\nhand, 100% natural corks can lead to <strong>the presence of TCA<\/strong>. Known as cork\ntaint, this is a wine fault that\u2019s fungal in origin, and even in low concentrations\n\u2013 3 ng\/L \u2013 it can completely ruin a wine by giving it a damp, moldy odor.\nNowadays, <strong>both the cork industry and the most cutting-edge wineries are\nmaking significant efforts to prevent and avoid cork taint<\/strong>.
