Following the varietals X-15 and X-16 (Xarel\u00b7lo), CF-15 (Cabernet Franc) and SM-16 (Sumoll), <strong>Jean Leon<\/strong> has released <strong>MS-18<\/strong>, an homage to Pened\u00e8s, made 100% from the indigenous variety Malvasia de Sitges. It is part of an exclusive collection that honors the most intuitive and determined side of Jean Leon, the winery&#8217;s founder. To get a better idea of this new experimental wine, we sat down with <strong>Mireia<\/strong> <strong>Torres<\/strong>, <strong>Jean<\/strong> <strong>Leon&#8217;s<\/strong> director, and winemaker <strong>Roser<\/strong> <strong>Catas\u00fas<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Mireia: How would you describe Jean Leon&#8217;s Experimental Wine range?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The aim of the experimental wine range is to show the immense vinicultural potential of the Pened\u00e8s region through limited-production varietal wines made from exceptional varieties.<\/p>\n<p><strong>Roser: Why a Malvasia de Sitges?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Malvasia de Sitges is a historical variety from southern Greece (Monemvasia, which means Malvasia), which reached the Garraf in the early 14th century thanks to an <em>almog\u00e0ver<\/em> [a medieval professional soldier] fighting under Roger de Flor. Sitges was added to its name, thus forging a connection to the town and becoming a valuable and unique part of its heritage. The new MS-18, made 100% from the indigenous Malvasia de Sitges variety, is our tribute to Pened\u00e8s, the region that gave Jean Leon the chance to make exceptional wines with a unique personality and identity.<\/p>\n<p><strong>M: What does it bring to Jean Leon&#8217;s current wine range?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>After experimenting with Xarel\u00b7lo, Cabernet Franc, and Sumoll, we opted for this aromatic white Mediterranean grape to expand our collection of varietal wines. MS-18 is yet another step in Jean Leon&#8217;s commitment to producing Pened\u00e8s wines from varieties that display great potential in terms of quality.<\/p>\n<p><strong>R: How is this wine made?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>The grapes are from a young vineyard planted in clay soils at 145 meters above sea level. The harvest was done entirely by hand. The grapes were gently pressed, followed by alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel vats. This process took about 12 days at a controlled temperature (15\u00baC).<\/p>\n<div id=\"attachment_26841\" style=\"width: 860px\" class=\"wp-caption alignnone\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-26841\" class=\"size-large wp-image-26841\" src=\"https:\/\/jeanleon.com\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/05\/malvasia_interior-850x560.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"850\" height=\"560\" \/><p id=\"caption-attachment-26841\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Processed with VSCO with a4 preset<\/p><\/div>\n<p><strong>M: How would you describe the wine&#8217;s characteristics?\u00a0<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>A lot of care went into making this artisan wine to achieve a youthful, fresh style. It has a brilliant yellow color, and the nose reveals delicate floral and lychee fruit aromas with apricot undertones. The palate entry is round, followed by balanced acidity and a delicate perfume.<\/p>\n<p><strong>R: How many bottles did you produce?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>This is a very exclusive wine with a very limited production of only 2,481 bottles. All of the bottles are sealed and labeled (collar) by hand.<\/p>\n<p><strong>M: Are you already thinking about the next Experimental wine?<\/strong><\/p>\n<p>Of course!
