Maintaining a family tradition: this was the goal behind Daniel and Manel Cespedosa’s decision to revive their family’s passion for the restaurant business. Their grandparents (Nicasi and Mar\u00eda) opened the legendary Bodega Monumental<\/strong> across from the bullfighting ring on Carrer Marina in Barcelona.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Three generations later, the bodega [which refers to a classic type of wine shop and bar] re-opened on Carrer Creu Coberta, right around the corner from Pla\u00e7a Espanya. That was over four years ago, and the culinary passion<\/strong> they inherited from their grandparents and their mother Teresa is still going strong, 80 years later.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

Sharing the joy of great food<\/strong> is the spirit that drives the Bodega Monumental restaurant. They serve traditional Mediterranean cuisine with a signature twist or two.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The restaurant is divided into three different spaces. La Bodegueta<\/strong> seats 25 people and is available for private dinners and parties; the Muntanya<\/strong> dining room seats 50, and the Mar<\/strong> dining room, the newest of the three, allows for an extensive menu dedicated exclusively to rice dishes.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

According to Dani Cespedosa, \u201cnourishment isn\u2019t the only reason people eat; we do so for enjoyment and happiness too<\/strong>. This is why we serve dishes brimming with Mediterranean flavor, as well as some of our own creations.\u201d<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

The kitchen serves food all day, which attracts a wide variety of customers. Neighborhood locals, tourists and, of course, aficionados of the classic vermut<\/em><\/strong>. This is clearly their speciality. They have become a veritable vermuteria\/restaurant.<\/p>\n

 <\/p>\n

This means customers can begin with a vermut<\/em> (vermouth), a classic Catalan aperitif served with pickled delicacies or cockles, and then dig into a delectable rice dish or a stone-grilled T-bone steak. Furthermore, like all bodegas, they sell bulk wine or vermouth straight from the barrel. This tradition has carried over from the old Bodega Monumental.<\/p>\n

In a lovely turn of events, the Cespedosa family reacquired the original Bodega Monumental<\/strong> on Carrer Marina this spring. 80 years and three generations later, it will re-open its doors.
